Moyers and Stewart

Two of my favorite journalists  (oh wait,  Jon Stewart is a comedian…I keep forgetting)…..but these two are absolutely my favorite “reporters”/commentators to watch.  Moyers is keenly aware of SOOOO many things that mainstream media just totally misses.  And so is,  from a lampoon/satirical side, is Jon Stewart.  IN interviews like this one,  you see how deep this guy’s thinking runs (as if you can’t already get good hints at that from the genius of the Daily Show).

I videotaped the 1am re-broadcast of last night’s show and just watched it.  This has to be one of the top 5 interviews on television that I have ever seen.  It will go online sometime today (update: the complete segment with Jon Stewart is now here) ,  and as soon as it does,  I’ll be posting a link.

Moyers also showed a clip of Stewart’s interview earlier this week with John McCain  — part 2 here,  and I can’t believe I didn’t hear about this.  Guess I wasn’t scanning as closely this week,  but Moyers talked about how much play this interview got on the news media.  I guess OUR local news media here in Nashville doesn’t consider this news.  But McCain got quite “un-nerved” or “pounced upon”. Stewart and McCain really started talking over one another,  and had a “calm down….NO,  YOU calm down” exchange,  and the studio audience was booing several of McCain’s answers.

I’ll have to do a post on McCain sometime in the near future,  since it looks like he has become a part of the RNC mirage-building apparatus.  He’s lost whatever credibility he did have once as an “insider” voice of reason/non-entranced.  As Stewart pointed out,  McCain “retreated” into the appeal to “supporting our men and women who are brave”,  actually holding his head down ,  eyes fixed away from Stewart’s.

Of course,  we know that the “new message” is that he’s running for the Republican nomination,  and he has to veer radically back “on message”.

The NEW YORK TIMES declared that when Jon Stewart took over as anchor of Comedy Central’s THE DAILY SHOW, he “breathed new life into a show that hadn’t even seemed to need it.” In 2003, Stewart said of his role hosting the show, “Liberal and conservative have lost their meaning in America. I represent the distracted center.” As declared on the show’s site, “THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART is the most important television show ever, with the most important guests, hosts, and news – current event news, pop culture news, sports news, entertainment news – of all time.”
