“Massive and effective street protest” was a global oxymoron until — suddenly, shockingly — starting exactly a year ago, it became the defining trope of our times. And the protester once again became a maker of history.
One might ask how this is “theological”. Well, my theology includes those “theologies” which do not claim to be “theologies”. James K.A. Smith calls these “theology¹″, which is something like an “ideology” which is a defining shaper of the holder. This is the “ultimate value” which shapes the holder. And it is , in fact, a “theology”. They may not call it this, but it is. And some are “idolatrous” and some are “inspired” or looked upon with favor and love by God. The God of the Bible I read is somewhat radical in the way the rich are portrayed. How about this from James (HT to @RogerWolsey for a tweet linking to a Facebook post this morning):
Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you. – James 5:1-6
This is yet another “in your face” example from the Scriptures that somehow has been ignored by the Christian Right. They collect and roll out every Biblical mention of anything re: homosexuality, but ignore in totality the LARGER number of passages like this, including words of Jesus himself, who NEVER mentions homosexuality. Something about thaty should tell us that God is NOT a “status-quo” kind of God. Quite the contrary. There is more activity OUT THERE in the cries of the increased number of oppressed and downtrodden than there is INSIDE the churches. So it seems it’s time to GET OUT THERE and “go mobile”.
